Vioxx (generic name – Rofecoxib) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was withdrawn in 2004 over safety concerns. It was particularly popular among physicians for the treatment of patients with arthritis and other conditions causing chronic or acute pain, but Merck (manufacturer of the drug) voluntarily withdrew it from the market because of concerns about increased risk of heart attack and stroke associated with long-term, high-dosage use. Vioxx was one of the most widely used drugs to ever be withdrawn from the market, and naturally there were some some fallout and numerous lawsuits associated with Vioxx. A pharmaceutical law firm can sometimes provide guidance regarding the safety information of the drugs on the market and understand the nuances in lawsuits involving big brands (see, paxil lawsuits) that can shape the industry.
